Summer 2016: „Barocco!“
What happens when Baroque artistry meets Cuban rhythm? That was the question for 31 Cuban and European music students who met during CuE in Hamburg in July 2016.
The first transatlantic orchestra project in 2015 had sparked a particular enthusiasm for early music at a workshop on period performance practice. To respond to the wish for more guidance on historical playing methods, while communicating a sound understanding of European Baroque music, a special course for string players was offered in the summer of 2016. Entitled “Barocco!”, it focused on the repertoire of the Baroque. Course members practised Baroque ensemble playing, were taught on Baroque instruments and got to know the culture of the Baroque in Europe through dance and music. After several days of tuition with intensive work in small groups, the different sections were brought together and augmented by a continuo group to form a large Baroque ensemble. As leader of the orchestra, violinist Chouchane Siranossian directed the players from her desk in the Baroque manner. The course culminated in a benefit concert for the children’s charity KinderPaCT in Hamburg.
