CONCERTS: CHRISTMAS IN EUROPE

Whether Norway or France, Germany or Poland: At Christmas, people sing everywhere in Europe. Making music with friends, relatives or a community connects people across the borders of countries, languages and cultures. For us as European ensembles, this idea has been close to our hearts from the very beginning. In the summer of 2020, the Balthasar Neumann Choir recorded the CD “Christmas in Europe” and released it in December of last year. In the pre-Christmas season of 2021, the programme can finally be performed in live concerts in Hamburg and Fontainebleau. We follow a line from Nordic folk tunes to Spanish villancicos and Russian hymns as well as to movements from Mendelssohn’s Christus Oratorium.

The programme, with works from around 15 countries, reflects our international composition as well as our artistic self-image. It is a living expression of the European idea: a reflection on common roots and values, the joy of making music together – and perhaps beyond.
