FAURÉ: CANTIQUE DE JEAN RACINE

This film was produced as part of Thomas Hengelbrock and the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble’s artistic residency at the Château de Fontainebleau (2021–2023). In February 2021, despite lockdowns and curfews as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic, the directors of the Château made a large-scale music video project possible by opening their doors to the ensemble’s musicians from all over Europe.

FILM: REHEARSING – WHY?

Ensemble work is a team sport! Musicians have to train as individuals, but then, just as in team sports, they also have to train together. Both aspects are very important and that is a really important reason why we do these projects, so that we can keep holding onto the extremely high level of quality which we have worked for!

The impact of the Corona Pandemic and the Lockdown in December 2020 on each individual, both economically and psychologically, is extreme — this is not only true for artists. However, the self-employed have been suffering from a kind of cultural lockdown for months already, and again we want to give them a face and a voice.

Stop the Silence!

With their performance of Haydn’s „The Creation“, the Balthasar Neumann Ensembles and Thomas Hengelbrock have put an end to the silence imposed on choral singing by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In Dortmund’s Konzerthaus, we showed that anything is possible, if you never give up!
The documentary gives impressions of some of our circumstances and experiences during this outstanding project, which tested the limits of human possibility.
